These skin care tips are what I follow myself and what I advise my clients to follow. All of the advice below is what I have found helps my clients have clear, balanced, nourished and vibrant skin.

All of my skin care tips are based on a minimal, less is more approach to skin care. Also, I firmly believe in natural and clean skin care. I will help you better understand natural skin care, help you find a routine that works for you, and most importantly, help you have the skin you love!

These 25 professional skin care tips are what I have found works best for myself and my clients time and time again.

No matter what your skin care journey has been, if you have done nothing or tried everything under the sun, you deserve to have the skin you love. I’ll help you get there.

1. Get Plenty Of Sleep

Hormones, like human growth hormone, that aid in skin repair are produced while you are sleeping. Skin healing and rejuvenation happens while you are sleeping, so getting plenty of sleep is imperative to having balanced skin.

When you are sleep deprived, your body struggles to maintain optimum health.

2. Only Cleanse Once A Day

I know you are told to cleanse at least twice a day. Sometimes even three times a day. In my years of experience, I have found that cleansing too much can actually cause more damage. 


Your skin produces sebum, a waxy, oily substance to moisturize itself. When you wash your face with a cleanser, it can strip the oils off your skin. This isn’t ideal because your skin needs sebum as a protective barrier, as well as a natural moisturizer.

If this protective barrier is disrupted or removed, skin becomes more permeable to microorganisms (such as bacteria), harsh chemicals, and pollutants. Also, your skin can become too dry because it’s natural lubricant is stripped off.

When your skin gets too dry it will pump out more sebum to try to moisturize itself, so you will then feel greasy. When you over-cleanse, you create a battle in your skin. It is fighting not to be too dry or too oily.

The solution?

Cleanse once a day!

In the morning rinse your skin with water or an astringent but don’t use a cleanser. The best time to cleanse your face is in the evening. Wash off any dirt, grime, and makeup.

3. Exfoliate Sparingly

I have many clients who come in for facials and their skin is red, irritated, flaky dry, or overly greasy and the common problem…

They are over-exfoliating.

Over-exfoliating is drying and causes your skin to weaken. This can cause your skin to peel or produce excess oil to protect itself. Also, when the skin is weakened it is can not defend itself against bacteria and infections.

There is absolutely no reason to exfoliate every day. Not even with a gentle cleansing scrub. It is too drying and damaging to your skin.

For combination to oily skin, I suggest you exfoliate 2 to 3 times a week with either a physical facial scrub or chemical enzyme. For dry skin 1 to 2 times a week is best. If you have normal or balanced skin then you can exfoliate once a week or even once every other week.

Be sure to exfoliate sparingly so you can reap all the amazing benefits of exfoliating without damaging your skin.

4. Don’t Exfoliate Acneic Skin

Exfoliation is a great way to prevent pimples by keeping the pores clear of debris. But, If you have active breakouts, using a facial scrub can weaken the skin and it will not be able to defend itself against bacteria and infections. This could actually cause more pimples to form.

Using a physical exfoliating scrub on acneic skin can actually spread the infection to other parts of the face, which is not good. The best thing to do is to skip exfoliating altogether.

Instead, soothe your skin and give it time to heal and renew.

5. Eat Well

Proper nutrition is vital for healthy skin. You are what you eat. If you eat junk food or any food lacking nutritional value, your appearance will reflect your unhealthy choices with problematic and toneless skin. Cleaning up your diet can work wonders on improving your skin health.

Eating a diet of foods high in complex carbohydrates, healthy fats, high in fiber, and moderate in lean protein. Include several servings of fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and beans.

6. Soothe Inflammation

You want to make sure to keep your skin barrier healthy and strong. Be sure to use skin care ingredients that help reduce chronic inflammation and that help repair your skin.

Chronic inflammation can cause acne breakouts, rosacea and visible signs of aging like wrinkles and sagging skin. If your skin is already irritated, seek out topical products that will help soothe and decrease inflammation.

7. Remove Your Makeup

I know how hard it can be to do bedtime chores when you are exhausted and tired. Trust me, just getting in to brush my teeth is brutal. But makeup removal is extremely important.

If you don’t take everything off before you go to bed it can cause breakouts, make your skin dull, and not let your skin heal and rejuvenate.

If washing your makeup off before bed is hard, then remove it first thing when you get home for the evening. That way it’s done and out of the way when you want to crawl into bed.

8. Use Common Sun Sense 

Sun protection is important when you are going to be exposed to the sun. If you know you will be spending time in the sunshine, apply an SPF.

Use common sun sense and apply sun protection if you will be in the sunshine. Protect your skin from damaging UVB rays. But don’t feel like you need to apply SPF constantly. If you don’t spend a lot of time outdoors then you may not need to worry about SPF as much. Use common sense.

9. Do Facial Massage

Facial massage can help melt away tension and fluid in your face, as well as lift and sculpt your muscles. The end result is more radiant skin.

Adding facial massage into your skin care routine will help stimulate the muscles in the face and brings oxygen to that area, which is a natural facelift. The blood flow to the area increases collagen production and gives your skin a natural glow.

A great time to massage your face is when you apply your moisturizer. Use upward strokes starting from the neck and gently working toward the forehead. Be sure to concentrate on the delicate skin around the eyes with gentle circular motions.

10. Drink Plenty Of Water

Water helps keep your skin plump and hydrated. Your body literally can’t move or work without water so be sure to have plenty throughout the day.

There are many calculations on how to figure out how much water you should be drinking a day but I usually divide my body weight and drink that many ounces of water a day.

11. Get Vitamins

Make sure you get enough vitamins to keep your skin looking healthy and youthful. A variety of vitamins and antioxidants will help improve the health and quality of your skin.

Be sure to get plenty of vitamins in your diet for healthy skin. Find a good quality multi-vitamin to take daily.  Also, look for essential minerals and vitamins in your skin care product ingredients.

A few of the most important vitamins are vitamin C, vitamin E, vitamin D, vitamin A, and vitamin K.

12. Don’t Believe Anit-Aging Hype

One word I ban at my spa is “anti-aging”. I despise this word. It’s such a negative and sad word. There is no getting around it, you are getting older.

There is nothing wrong with wanting to age gracefully and wisely. To strive for healthy, youthful, and nourished skin. It’s absolutely fine to be aware of the dangers of premature aging and doing your best to keep your skin balanced and happy.

Lots of anti-aging skin care products are making false claims that play into your insecurities. As you age, your collagen and elastin slow down and there isn’t much a beauty product can do to reverse it.

Also, don’t feel like you have to start doing “preventative” skin care. Especially if you are still in your 20’s. Yes, take care of yourself and focus on a healthy skin care routine, but there is no reason to start using harsh and expensive skin care products or treatment to try to stop something that is inevitable.

Go live life, be happy, and love your skin, no matter what!

13. Don’t Try To Shrink Your Pores

Pore size is genetically determined and you can’t make pores physically smaller. Nope, you can’t shrink your pores, no matter what the skin care products tell you. It is best to accept what you have been given.

You can’t change the size of your pores, but there are things you can do to minimize the appearance of your pores. Focus on keeping your pores clean and healthy, but know that you can’t change the size of your pores. Ever.

14. Increase Circulation In Your Skin

To help keep your skin healthy and to look less dull and tired-looking, be sure your skin has good blood flow.

Blood flow helps nourish skin cells and keep them vital. Blood carries oxygen and nutrients to working cells throughout the body, including the skin. Besides providing oxygen, blood flow also helps carry away waste products, including free radicals, from working cells.

Exercise, doing yoga, and facial massage helps increase circulation in your skin.

15. Make Time For Self-Care

Self-care is vital for having healthy skin. Make time to relax, rejuvenate, and rest. Self-care helps relieve stress and lowers your blood pressure and helps you have vibrant skin.

16. Work On Stress Relief

From working with my clients, I truly believe that stress is the main reason for most of your skin problems. Most skin imbalances are hormonal which can cause breakouts, irritation, and uneven skin.

Stress makes your body produce hormones like cortisol, and cortisol tells your oil glands to pump out more oil. This chemical response makes your skin more sensitive, reactive, and prone to breakouts and skin problems. This is not ideal.

Focusing on reducing stress is way more beneficial for helping hormonal breakouts than any topical blemish cream. The problem with topical products is that they are focused on drying up the excess oil your skin is producing. Ok, that’s fine, but if you don’t nip the overproduction of oil in the bud than it will be a battle you will be fighting for a long time.

To help stop the oil from taking over your skin, you need to focus on keeping your stress hormones in check.

Reducing stress should be one of your main goals and stress relief encompasses the other daily self-care habits we need to be practicing every day for amazing skin.

17. Use Facial Oils To Moisturize

Facial oils are high in fat and have therapeutic properties to moisturize the skin or to treat problem areas.

In addition to their fatty acids, skin care oils also contain antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients that benefit the skin. They are extremely beneficial and are a natural way to deliver fatty acids and nutrients to your skin without clogging your pores.

When your skin is dry, it is lacking oil. I say, copy nature. If your skin naturally produces sebum (a waxy, oily substance) to moisturize itself, then using plant-based carrier oils is best for balanced skin.

18. Hydrate The Skin Before Applying Moisturizer

Dryness is when your skin isn’t producing enough lipid cells (fatty acids) on its own. Applying a moisturizer can increase the moisture level in your skin.

A hydrator contains humectants, which helps keep your skin moist. Humectants work to catch moisture from the air and soak it into your skin.

Hydrators are important for dehydrated skin that needs hydration. Dry skin needs oil and moisturization.

To have happy and balanced skin, it is best to apply a hydrator to your skin and then apply a moisturizer on top of it so help soak into the layers of your skin.

19. Skip Multi-Function Products

In my experience of being an esthetician, I have found my clients who use multi-purpose products have troubled skin issues.

Breakouts, redness, and irritation.

To help keep your skin balanced then it is best to keep your skin care products separate. For example, a moisturizer is made to moisturize your skin, and an SPF is made to protect your skin from UVB rays. They are two separate products with specific ingredients and specific functions.

20. Use Lavender And Tea Tree To Heal Blemishes 

Tea tree oil and lavender oil both have antiseptic properties, which means that they can inhibit the growth of bacteria.

When applied topically, they may prevent skin infections, heal blemishes, help prevent and heal acne, reduce redness, and are inflammatories.

I have many of my clients mix a few drops of lavender and tea tree essential oils into the water, aloe vera juice, or witch hazel and spritz on their skin to help have clear and blemish-free skin.

Many of my clients swear by using these two essential oils as a spot treatment to help have vibrant skin.

21. Less Is More

Don’t feel like you need to do lots of steps in your skin care routine. I have actually found that less is more when approaching skin care.

I don’t really think 10+ step skin care routine is necessary. In fact, it can be damaging if you are using products that aren’t great for your skin type or conditions.

22. Add Some Facial Skin Care Tools Into Your Routine

Regular use of skin care tools is important to help keep your skin functioning properly.

Your skin becomes dull and tired both from external factors, such as pollution in the air, and internal factors, such as diet and bad lifestyle habits.

It’s important to stimulate and tone your skin regularly to make sure that the skin is working properly.

Regular use of skin care tools is vital to your health and well-being, and for having radiant skin!

Some of my favorite skin care tools to help stimulate blood flow, oxygen, and a natural glow our my Kansa Wand, Facial Scrub Towel, and a dry brush.

23. Some Skin Care Routines Are Not Best For Everyone

Forget the fads and know that some skin care routines are not best for all skin types.

There are 6 skin type categories known as Fitzpatrick skin typing, which is a scientific skin type classification. Developed in 1975, the system classifies skin type according to the amount of pigment your skin has and your skin’s reaction to sun exposure.

Skin Type:

  • I (scores 0–6) always burns, never tans (palest; freckles).
  • II (scores 7–13) usually burns, tans minimally
  • III (scores 14–20) sometimes mild burn, tans uniformly
  • IV (scores 21–27) burns minimally, always tans well (moderate brown)
  • V (scores 28–34) very rarely burns, tans very easily (dark brown)
  • VI (scores 35–36) Never burns (deeply pigmented dark brown to darkest brown)

What this means is that a skin care routine may be great for one skin type but not ideal for another skin type.

24. Get Essential Fatty Acids

Your body needs essential fatty acids (EFA) but it doesn’t make EFAs on its own. You only get them from the food you eat.

Essential fatty acids like omega-3s and omega-6s are building blocks for healthy cell membranes and they help produce the skin’s natural oil barrier. This is critical in keeping skin hydrated, nourished, and youthful.

Be sure to get some essential fatty acids in your diet or through supplements.

25. Go Natural

The great thing about using natural skin care products is that most of the ingredients serve a purpose.

A lot of ingredients in beauty products are only included to make the products smell a certain way, to make it feel a certain way, or to make sure the product has a long shelf life. These ingredients have nothing to do with the health of the skin.

Natural and organic skin care are mostly made with ingredients that are for making your skin healthy and balanced.

The shelf life may not be as long but you know that the products are clean and effective.
